South Carolina's End to the 2009 Season

Ярлыки:

When South Carolina signed Steve Spurrier to be their head coach some fans felt that the Gamecocks would quickly become a national title contender. Unfortunately, life in the SEC has not been kind to them. South Carolina has been a good team in recent years, but they have yet to break into the realm of being a great team. They have been competitive in many games, but they have been unable to sustain that success into anything that is lasting. That is the way their 2009 season went as well. South Carolina finished 7-6, but showed enough promise to leave fans wanting more.

Offensively, the totals for South Carolina were not overwhelming. The Gamecocks got by on a stout defense that held opponents in the low 20's and an offense that did just enough to win. Stephen Garcia threw for a modest 2,862 yards and 17 touchdowns while the running game was relatively anemic. Alshon Jeffery had a solid season as one of the better receivers in the SEC with 763 yards and 6 receiving touchdowns. South Carolina's strategy was very simply this year. If they held teams under 20 points, they won. If they gave up 20 or more, they lost.

The gamecock's season began on the opening Thursday night of the year with a rather dull 7-3 win at North Carolina State. The stout defense that South Carolina showed in that victory struggled mightily the next week as it gave up 41 points in a 41-37 loss to Georgia on the road. After gathering a road split in the first two games, South Carolina returned to Columbia to face Florida Atlantic. The Gamecocks put it all together in a 38-16 win over the Owls to start a four game winning streak.

On that streak, the gamecocks played like one of the best teams in the nation and even cracked the top 25 for a few weeks. The biggest win came after the Florida Atlantic game when #4 Mississippi came to town. The South Carolina defense made life difficult for Jevan Snead in a 16-10 win on national TV. South Carolina then beat South Carolina State (38-14) and Kentucky (28-26) to finish the four game homestand with four straight wins. Unfortunately, a trip to eventual national champion Alabama followed. Alabama's defense dominated that day with a 20-6 win.

The gamcocks did put it together for one more week with a nice 14-10 over Vanderbilt, but that is when the bottom fell out on the season. Three straight losses to Tennessee (31-13), Arkansas (33-16), and #1 Florida (24-14) highlighted the gamecocks troubles both on the road and against great teams. A measure of redemption was found in the regular season finale, however, with a 34-17 win over archrival Clemson. That gave South Carolina a berth in the Papa John's Bowl in Birmingham against a Connecticut team that was playing with an emotional chip on its shoulder. They were able to knock off the Gamecocks 20-7 as a dedication to their fallen teammate, Jasper Howard.
